The United States Government, through the USDA's BioPreferred Program, is working towards this objective.  And being the largest customer in the world (they purchase $500 billion in goods and services every year), the effect of this program can be far reaching.

 

The new regulations, passed through a series of Legislative Actions and an Executive Order, state that U.S. Federal Departments and Agencies must now give procurement preference to designated items composed of biobased products unless those items are not reasonably available, do not perform adequately, or are not reasonably priced.

 

There was significant discussion of this topic during Department of Agriculture Secretary Vilsack's Senate confirmation hearing.  In fact, Secretary Vilsack sent a letter (click here to see the letter) to all Cabinet Heads to be sure that their agencies and departments are ready to embrace this program and move to biobased products.  Further, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) is working to call each Cabinet level department to testify to the Senate Agriculture Committee on its implementation progress.  Also, the General Services Agency (GSA), the Federal Government’s procurement arm is on board and is working to get their 18,000+ suppliers to green their supply chain with an ambitous "zero environmental footprint" program.

But besides coming from the top, biobased cleaners make sense from the bottom.  Safer for people, kinder to the environment.  A wise choice for today's world.  Consumers want natural and plant-based alternatives as they will see a benefit to their health as well as being better for the environment.  And this demand is expanding as new information about our society's effect on the environment is being learned.  Now is the time to act, as we have a chance of leaving a legacy that will help make our world be better.
