Global Green Benefits, as a Bio-Fuel, as a Solvent:

Global Green as a Bio-Fuel

Biodiesel offers similar power to petroleum diesel fuel. Biodiesel has a higher cetane number than most U.S. petroleum diesel fuel. In testing of more than 50 million on-road miles and many marine and off-road applications, biodiesel shows similar fuel consumption, horsepower, torque and haulage rates as petroleum diesel.

Biodiesel provides significant lubricity improvement over petroleum diesel fuel. Lubricity results of biodiesel and petroleum diesel using industry test methods indicate that there is a marked improvement in lubricity when biodiesel is added to petroleum diesel fuel. Biodiesel levels as low as one percent can provide a 65 percent increase in lubricity.

Compatibility of biodiesel with engine components. The switch to low sulfur petroleum diesel fuel has caused most OEMs to switch components suitable for use with biodiesel. Biodiesel can be used in existing engines and fuel injection equipment with little impact to operating performance.

Biodiesel is considerably less hazardous than petroleum diesel. Pure biodiesel (B-100) does not ignite until 150 ° C (300 ° F), petroleum diesel burns at 50 ° C (120 ° F). Biodiesel is also significantly less toxic than petroleum diesel and is more biodegradable. This reduces the negative impacts of spills.

Biodiesel is four times as efficient as diesel fuel in utilizing fossil energy. Biodiesel yields about 3.2 units of fuel for every unit of fossil energy consumed in the lifecycle. By contrast, petroleum diesel yields only 0.83 units of fuel product per unit of fossil energy consumed.

EPAct Benefits. Congress approved the use of biodiesel as an Energy Policy Act (EPAct) compliance strategy. The legislation allows EPAct-covered fleets (federal, state and public utility fleets) to meet their alternative fuel vehicle purchase requirements simply by buying 450 gallons of B-100 and burning at least a 20% blend.

Biodiesel’s lack of polluting emissions is the most dramatic difference between it and petroleum diesel.

B100 achieves a reduction in emissions from petroleum diesel. Specifically:

  • 78% reduction in greenhouse gases, namely CO2.
  • 90% reduction of carcinogens.
  • 55% reduction of particulates, the classic nasty black cloud of soot.
  • 56% reduction of hydrocarbons, a smog contributor.
  • 100% reduction of sulfur, a cause of acid rain.

Global Green as an Industrial Cleaner/Solvent

  • 100% Biodegradable- Can be used aqueous parts washers as a cleaning boost.
  • Easy and inexpensive to recycle
  • Renewable- made from soybean, corn and and other vegetable oils
  • Low VOC - can be used to reduce skin irritation in hand cleaners
  • Zero Vapor Pressure
  • High boiling point so it can be used either hot or cold, even in a heated ultra sonic and other heated parts washers
  • High solvency power for resins, polymers and dyes - KB value of 58 compared to 30 for mineral spirits (see sidebar)
  • Great penetration characteristics - can be used a penetrating oil for rusted parts like bolts
  • Stable in solvent formulations - can be mixed with mineral spirits to lower VOCs and raise cleaning performance
  • EPA approved SNAP solvent
  • Not a ODC- Ozone Depleting Chemical can replace many petroleum cleaning solvents
  • Not a HAP- Hazardous Air Pollutant minimizes training and liability
  • Not SARA - reportable lowers regulatory expenses
  • Non-carcinogenic - safe for your employees
  • Non-corrosive

What is the Kauri Butanol test and how do SSI Bio-Solvents score?

The kauri-butanol value (KB) of a solvent represents the maximum amount of that solvent that can be added to a stock solution of kauri resin (a fossil copal) in butyl alcohol without causing cloudiness. Since kauri resin is readily soluble in butyl alcohol but not in hydrocarbon solvents, the resin solution will tolerate only a certain amount of dilution. "Stronger" solvents such as toluene can be added in a greater amount (and thus have a higher KB value) than "weaker" solvents like hexane.

SSI bio-solvents have a significantly stronger KB value (and thus better solvency) than mineral spirits, D'Limonene and many other common solvents.

SSI bio-solvents are non flammable having a high flash point and don't readily evaporate. They are ideal for applications where longer dwell times are acceptable or even desired.

Here is how Clean Green, a product from our bio-product model line, compares to other common, more hazardous chemicals in use today:
