Award-Winning Innovation We are honored to have received recognition for our technology innovations. We received the Illinois Governors Award for our Grease Gator Aqueous Parts Washer System for the amount of pollution it eliminated. We received a Chicago Innovation Award for the Grease Gator's innovative design. We were recognized by the "Under the Radar", a MIT Alumni organization publication, that keeps its eye out for new innovations that can have a big impact. We work closely with the engineers at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center at the University of Illinois who are developing innovative pollution prevention technologies. Our partnship with the ISTC allows us to bring to market the most promising of these technologies. The University of Illinois is eager to move these state-of-the-art technologies from the lab to the market and we are honored to have earned the University's trust to help in this task. Our customers have benefited greatly from this access to the latest technologies which have helped their businesses as well as our environment. Another noteworth SSI innovation is a patented process that turns a waste stream of huge proportion into a commodity which has value. Tons of metal dust/fines (swarf) are generated each year through the process of metal finishing. Metal finishing is used by numerous industries to produce products of all types. This metal dust waste had to be landfilled because it is in too fine of a form to reprocess, and thus had no value to steel scrap processors. With SSI's innovation, this all changed. It allows metal dust to be made into steel blocks which meet scrap metal processor requirements. And we have licensed this metal fine processing technology to a large scrap metal processor who built a facility which came on-line in 2007. Further licensing arrangements and new plants are being planned for this exciting SSI technology. Turning a waste into a product is one of the best pollution prevention techniques available to industry and SSI's expertise in this area is significant.
