Research & Development

Solvent Systems International operates a Research and Development Lab and Engineering Firm. This group works closely with industry and educational institutions to design and commercialize pollution prevention equipment for industry.

Examples of projects in this area include the Metallic Binder Project and the Aqueous Parts Washer Project. They indicate how SSI assists moving promising technologies out of the lab and into practice.

The Metallic Binder Project

The Metallic Binder Project has developed an innovative binder material that can turn metal grinding fines into usable scrap metal. Previously this waste was turned away by scap metal producers as the metallic dust was too fine for metal recovery. Tons of this dust was sent to landfills. Solvent Systems new binder material changes that with a process that turns the dust into bricks (see picture). This brick meets all of the requirements which scrap metal producers look for and this waste now has value as scrap metal.

Another project is the Aqueous Parts Washer Project. Here is a recent press release of this new aqueous parts washer which promises to revolutionize parts washing.

Aqueous Parts Washer Technology Breakthrough

Solvent Systems International has introduced a new parts washer technology. This patented process uses a low emulsifying, aqueous cleaning solution along with a mechanical oil separation process to remove oil down to 200 ppm. Cleaning power that lasts and lasts with no need for a cleaning solution replacement ... ever. This machine requires very little maintenance and saves, for average use, over 1,000 lbs. of organic waste per month. With over 1 million mineral spirits parts washers across the United States, this technology can make a significant impact in pollution prevention. Current customers are amazed that an aqueous cleaner can clean as well as mineral spirits. A comprehensive chemical management study is available that illustrates how after heavy use there is no cleaning chemical breakdown.
